Just 11 million light-years away, NGC 253 is close enough that the structure comes through beautifully - dark dust lanes, star-forming knots, and the faint halo of older stars surrounding it all. It’s a starburst galaxy, meaning it’s forming new stars at a ferocious rate compared to something like the Milky Way. From the Gold Coast it climbs well into the sky, which is a privilege northern imagers simply don’t get.
